Nebraska City, NE
This Nebraska City barn has been in the Gottwald family for five generations on land originally purchased from the government in 1865. The requirement was to build a dwelling on the 160-acre property, so the barn was built around then. Albin Gottwald bought the farm in 1909 and lived there with his wife and six children, growing oats, wheat, beans, corn, alfalfa and prairie hay. The barn housed the horses, and the attached granary fed the livestock and chickens. The Gottwalds drew their water from a 94-foot hand-dug brick lined well. Special thanks to Marcella Gottwald for sharing her family’s story with us.
